How many times have you gone to a site to login to an account and have been asked to click one more link so that you can go to the login page? Don’t answer that, it’s a rhetorical question.
I get irritated when I’m asked to click another link because it wastes my time. Plus, most sites have a lot of useless information taking up the space anyway. How about providing two input boxes? Or maybe using AJAX so I don’t have to ask my mouse to talk to your server.
The reason for this post is that I was thinking about a bank’s website, which I visit every now and then to check my account balance. (No, that wasn’t a request for donations, but feel free to write me a cheque.) The site has loads of information and to login, you have to click a button that says, hold your breath, Login.
What that tells me is that the bank places its customers below the prospective customers in the food chain. Maybe I’m a little off with that last statement, but if I go to my bank’s site, I want information relevant to me, not to someone who might be a customer some day.
Maybe people should ask this question more often, Who is this site for?
